Menses or periods can be very painful for some women as they suffer from painful cramps during the menstrual periods. In medical terms menstrual cramps called dysmenorrhea. The common term for these cramps is period pains - they occur during the menstrual period time.

Menstrual cramps are felt in the lower abdomen and are very painful. The severity of the pains can vary from dull to extreme. As a rule, this pain is felt at the time of ovulation. Ovulation is a process when the egg cell is released by the ovaries to the fallopian tube.

There are mainly two types of menstrual cramps or period pains. One is primary dysmenorrhea and the second one is secondary dysmenorrheal. The primary one is most common. These pains usually do not have a known reason. This pain is known to last for a period of four days at the max and began one or two days before the onset of periods.

Secondary dysmenorrheal has many medical reasons behind it like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. The cramps in this type are related to the medical reasons.

The main reason behind menstrual cramps is a substance known as prostaglandin. This substance is known to cause inflammation and pain. One more reason behind this pain is the contraction of uterus at the time of menses.

There are many symptoms that can be associated with menstrual pains. Aside from cramps, some women also feel other symptoms like pain in the lower back that spreads to the thighs, dull and throbbing pain which is the lower portion of the abdomen, lightheadedness, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and abdominal bloating.

  2. The actual cause of menstrual cramps along with painful breasts or tender ovaries and/or headaches during or pre - is all indications of lack of iodine - plain and simple. Woman in North America most often suffer from these symptoms because we are exposed to halides that push iodine permanently out of our bodies, Because iodine is stored in the brain, breasts, ovaries and 20% of our muscle tissue and cells - but we hold the highest concentration in our thyroid. Every month our body needs to rebalance itself and the pain we feel as our iodine is pulled from the storage places or if we are depleted is the CAUSE of the pain. My mother never understood why we had pain during our periods at all - she didn't grow up in NA. She was from Trinidad where they are surrounded by the ocean and ate indigenous foods that naturally contain iodine and mineral -rich. I highly suggest for EVERY North American to READ Dr. Brownstein's book Iodine Why We Need It Why We Cannot Live Without It. It is in its 4th edition. You can visit his site: www.drbrownstein.com - he has other books about Salt your Way to Health explaining the MANY misconceptions of table salt vs sea salt. As well as the Miracle of Natural Hormones. What we need to know is WHY these issues occur and that it is our bodies simply communicating to us every month that it needs more. Cutting our bad foods is not going to solve problems. Eating foods that re rich in minerals and iodine like sea vegetables will help but you need to move QUICK - this is not an issue that goes away on its own.

  3. Do what women did for thousands of years - join a belly dance group. In the past there was no Midol - the moves in belly dance help the muscles - relieve cramps and help develop the muscles used in child birth. Belly dance is not a sexual thing - it was NOT the harem girl seducing the sultan. Women did not dance for men. They danced it to help themselves.
I joined a troupe several years ago - cramps are a thing of the past.
Oh - and it helps strengthen Kegel muscles also.
